Collaborative Efforts Against Ocean Encroachment: LERSA Joins Forces with Hon. Wasiu Sanni Eshilokun, Nigerian Conservation Foundation, and Eti-Osa East LCDA

LERSA MEETS WITH HON. WASIU SANNI ESHILOKUN, NIGERIAN CONSERVATION FOUNDATION AND ETI-OSA EAST LCDA

Alhaji Sulyman Bello, the President of Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association LERSA, led the Executive Council team to the Lekki Conservation Centre for an exploratory engagement with the Director General of Lekki Conservation Centre, Dr. Joseph Onoja, alongside Distinguished Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshilokun (The Senator Representing Lagos Central Senatorial District) and the Executive Vice Chairman of Eti-Osa East LCDA, Hon. Azeez Ismail, on Thursday the 24th of August 2023.

The engagement was to witness first hand the menacing Ocean Surge that have been rapidly destroying the nearby communities in the Eti-Osa, Lekki Corridor.

The Director General of Nigerian Conservation (NCF) gave a presentation of what had happened over the past decades and what will happen in the years to come if it's not attended to.

In his presentation, he showed that over 130 meters of land have been encroached by the Atlantic Ocean in 4 years, and in 2024 a projection of another 50 meters will be gone if no immediate intervention is made. He projected that if nothing is done, the ocean will reach the Lekki – Epe Expressway in no distant time.

Foremost Environmental Activist, Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi was also on hand to add technical and historical substance to the deliberations.

The Distinguished Senator expressed his deep concerns on the happenings and assured members/communities affected by the Ocean Surge and LERSA that the menacing issue will be top priority when the Senate resumes plenary sessions by the next month.

In his closing statement, he requested a lasting solution to the issue. The Nigerian Conservation Foundation and the LERSA Infrastructure Committee were mandated to come up with technically feasible solutions, for review and possible implementation.

The Senator's team, Eti-Osa East LCDA Executive Vice Chairman, President of LERSA and other Stakeholders as well as Community leaders made a fact-finding visit to the communities affected by the surge.
